Denver police managed to talk a man apparently undergoing a personal crisis into lowering himself to the ground after he climbed aboard a bucket crane and used the controls to lift himself high in the air.

The man’s behavior caused passersby headed to work outside the Denver City and County Building at 1437 Bannock St. to call 911 early Friday morning, Sonny Jackson, Denver police spokesman, said.

The man had climbed into the bucket of a crane used to put up Christmas lights or trim trees at the building at around 7 a.m., Jackson said. He had used the controls inside the bucket to lift himself up to a height of about 10 feet. He seemed to be distraught, Jackson said.

“He appeared to be in some type of crisis,” Jackson said. “He wasn’t protesting or anything like that.”

Denver police and firefighters spoke with him until he agreed to lower the crane and climb out of the bucket, he said. Jackson said authorities will speak with him and see what help he needs.
