Alcohol or marijuana are believed to have played a factor in a Christmas Eve crash on Interstate 70 near Genesee which left two people dead and a 6-year-old girl in critical condition, a Colorado State Patrol Spokesman said.

At roughly 8:24 p.m., state patrol received word of the two-car crash near mile marker 254 and the exit for U.S. 40. An eastbound vehicle lost control, veered across the median and crashed with a westbound vehicle, said Gary Cutler, a state patrol spokesman.

Both drivers were killed, and the 6-year-old girl, a passenger in the second vehicle, was transported to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, Cutler said.

The driver of the vehicle that lost control was identified as a 62-year-old woman from Frederick.

The driver of the westbound vehicle was identified as a 38-year-old woman from Clark.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours after the crash.
