Afternoon drives will never be the same following last week’s announcement that Alfred “Big Al” Williams was leaving Sports Radio 104.3 The Fan.

The longtime co-host of “The Drive” with Darren “D-Mac” McKee shook up Colorado’s sports talk radio world when he abruptly left The Fan to join KOA (850 AM, 94.1 FM), .

Now the question is: Who will fill Williams’ considerably large shoes on “The Drive”?

Another big fella, former Broncos offensive tackle Orlando Franklin, did some fill-in work last week, but it appears The Fan will be holding open tryouts to see who will sit opposite D-Mac.

Former Broncos defensive back Nick Ferguson started a two-day audition Monday and is expected to be the first of several vying for Big Al’s chair in the coming weeks. Who those other candidates will be, only time will tell.

Until then, we’ll at least offer a few suggestions, assuming, of course, that money is no object.

John Elway — I think we can all agree that the Broncos’ current general manager has already done all he can do as a front office leader. Nothing left to prove here. Might as well ride off into the sunset and give us daily insights on the many virtues of recycled NFL quarterbacks.

Shannon Sharpe — This is a rescue mission. We must save the former Broncos tight end from having to spend his mornings with Skip Bayless. Anything is better than that. Even getting constantly interrupted by D-Mac.

Bill Romanowski — Gotta be honest: I have no idea how this would turn out. But I do know the former Broncos linebacker would be entertaining. Or scary. Or both.

Chris “Birdman” Andersen — Speaking of scary, the only non-Bronco on the list is also Denver’s most famous catfishing victim. There’s no doubt the Birdman has some amazing stories from his time in Miami with LeBron and the Heatles. Besides, this is Nuggets Country, and he’s already living in the Denver area.

Jake Plummer — With The Snake’s storied handball career (presumably) behind him, it’s time for the former Broncos quarterback to share with the world . He’s previously done work for the Pac-12 Network. Now he can be exposed to an actual audience.

Tom Jackson — If you can make broadcasting magic happen with Chris Berman for the better part of three decades, there’s nothing you can’t do.

Jay Cutler — If only because it would be interesting to hear what apathy sounds like on the radio.
