The Pioneers are moving on.

The University of Denver knocked off Ohio State, 2-0, on Friday afternoon in the NCAA hockey tournament at Scheels Arena in Fargo, N.D. The victory advances the Pios to the national quarterfinals, where they will face American International.

While the Pios scored twice Friday, it was Les Lancaster’s goal late in the second period that served as the difference. Lancaster, a senior defenseman, beat the Buckeyes’ Tommy Napier thanks to an assist off the sticks off Emilio Pettersen and Michael Davies.

Colin Staub scored an empty-net goal for Denver with 0:58.3 remaining in the third period.

Denver attempted only 13 shots on the afternoon. Pioneers goalie Filip Larsson made 24 saves in the shutout.

The Pioneers’ quarterfinal game will be played Saturday at 7 p.m. American International upset No. 1 St. Cloud State, 2-1, on Friday night.
