Juan Carlos Macias, 37, died Tuesday from injuries he suffered in an Aug. 31 gunfight with Denver police officers in the LoHi neighborhood, the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner announced on Thursday.
Macias died of multiple gunshot wounds, an autopsy found.
According to an earlier report from Denver police Lt. Matt Clark, officers responded at around 10 p.m. on Aug. 31 to a call from two women who reported a man was following and harassing them. They said he had fired a shot in the air.
After a tip from a restaurant employee, police officers identified Macias as the suspect and located him near 15th and Central streets.
They ran a warrant check on him after he provided his name and identification. That’s when Macias allegedly pulled a revolver from his waistband and fired a round at one of the officers. He missed and the other officer fired back and hit Macias, who was transported to Denver Health Medical Center in critical condition.
Denver police held a news conference on Sept. 5 to provide an update on the shooting but did not provide public notice when Macias died.
There have been 43 officer-involved shootings in 2019 where police killed or wounded someone. The Macias shooting was the eighth in Denver.
