A Lakewood police officer fatally shot a man Monday while he and others were trying to serve two arrest warrants.

Officers were allowed into a home in the 1500 block of South Harlan Street where residents told police the 22-year-old suspect was in the basement, according to a Lakewood police news release. As officers talked to the man, another officer was in the backyard of the home.

The officer in the backyard saw the suspect trying to escape by crawling through a window in the basement, according to police. The man, who had a gun in his hand, was confronted by the officer and refused to drop his weapon, police said. The officer then fired several times, striking the man, Rob Albrets, a Lakewood police spokesman, said.

Police tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate the man. He was taken to a hospital and died, police said. His identity has not been released.

Police were trying to arrest the man on warrants for assault and failure to comply, Albrets said.

No officers were injured, according to Lakewood police.

The Jefferson County Critical Response Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The Lakewood police officer who shot the suspect is on administrative leave, per policy.
