According to an oft-cited , the typical American will shovel in about 3,000 calories of food and snacks on Thanksgiving, and that doesn’t even count the high-cal beverages you could consume over the course of the day. It would take you hours of running, swimming or walking to burn all that off.
Maybe you’re more realistic and plan to work it off in the days (weeks?) that follow. Or maybe you don’t particularly care about calorie overload and are just looking for something for the family to do outdoors on Thanksgiving weekend. Here are some ideas:
Cross country skiing
Snow Mountain Ranch, located 14 miles northwest of Winter Park, had more than 12 miles of trails in operation this week, with more expected to come online soon. For up-to-date information, or call 970-887-2152, ext. 4173. Keep in mind that if the weather is warm up there next weekend, the trails might only be open in the mornings. Nordic centers in Breckenridge (970-453-6855) and Frisco (970-668-2570) are open as well, and Keystone (970-496-4275) opens Saturday.
Race a 5K
How about a ? It starts and finishes at Grandma’s House, a small brewery on South Broadway in the heart of Antique Row. You don’t even need to get up early: The race starts at 11 a.m. All participants receive a free craft brew (bring an ID if you want to imbibe).
Hiking
Here are three suggestions for hikes that are nearby, picturesque and give you some good elevation gain: (Lakewood), (Golden) and (Morrison). These are easy to moderate hikes, family-friendly (except perhaps for small children), with exceptional views. And if you’re from out of town, they will give you a nice memory of Colorado scenery.

The weekend after Thanksgiving, four will be in operation: In Breckenridge, the hits speeds of up to 25 mph over 2,500 feet of track. is 5,800 feet long. claims it has the longest run in North America at 6,280 linear feet. At Snowmass, the , more than a mile, reaches speeds up to 28 mph.

Tree-lightings
Two resorts will have Christmas tree lighting ceremonies with associated holiday markets: from 1 to 7 p.m and from noon to 5 p.m. The , a new 110-foot-tall digital tree at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, lights up for the first time on Nov. 30. Also on Nov. 30: (5 p.m.), (4:30 p.m.), (5 p.m.) and (5:30 p.m.) will have tree lightings, and the will have one with a holiday market (3-7 p.m.).
