Investigators in Jefferson County arrested a police impersonator suspect Wednesday, the sheriff’s office said.

About 8 a.m. Tuesday, a man “flashed a fake badge” and motioned for a woman to pull over in traffic on eastbound C-470 near West Alameda Parkway, according to the sheriff’s office.

The man identified himself as a “federal agent” and showed a gold Interpol U.S. special agent badge while asking the driver for her identification and registration.

The driver, who was suspicious about the traffic stop, didn’t abide with the demand and instead said to a passenger who shot cellphone video of the incident: “I’m getting out of here.”

After releasing video and a photo from the incident, the sheriff’s office on Wednesday evening said Michael Nelson, 50, was arrested as a suspect. Nelson was held on suspicion of impersonating a peace officer and false imprisonment.
