Denver police on Tuesday arrested a suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred last month on a pedestrian bridge over Interstate 25 in southeast Denver.

Christopher Butler, 29, is being held for investigation of first-degree murder in connection with the Jan. 9 killing of 31-year-old Luis Nieves, police announced in a news release Wednesday.

Investigators believe Butler shot Nieves on the pedestrian bridge that crosses the interstate near its intersection with Colorado Boulevard in the Virginia Village neighborhood.

Police did not release additional details about the arrest and the probable cause statement explaining their case is sealed.

Investigators said tips from community members helped them track down Butler.

Butler has been arrested several times by Denver-area law enforcement, court records show. His prior arrests include assault, burglary, false imprisonment, drug possession and multiple allegations of domestic violence.

Six people have died in homicides in Denver so far this year.
