Three Canadian seniors will serve as leaders of the University of Denver hockey team next season.
Forward Kohen Olischefski was named captain Monday and forward Ryan Barrow and defenseman Griffin Mendel will serve as alternate captains, the school announced shortly after classmate and 2019-20 captain Ian Mitchell signed with the Chicago Blackhawks.
“I am extremely honored and humbled to be named captain of the Pioneers,” Olischefski, who is from Abbotsford, British Columbia, said in a news release. “This is something that I take a huge amount of pride in and I’m excited to carry on the program’s legacy and tradition. We can’t wait to get back and start working toward a national championship.”
Barrow is from Banff, Alberta, and Mendel from Kelowna, B.C.
“What excites us about this leadership group is their ability to lead by example and hold others accountable to the standards of Denver hockey,” head coach David Carle said in a release. “They will lead a veteran team in our pursuit of the program’s ninth national championship.”
