Estes Park distillery fire: 2 employees injured in possible explosion

A possible explosion and fire on Saturday morning injured two employees of a distillery in Estes Park, a fire rescue official said.

The Estes Valley Fire Protection District responded to the incident about 9 a.m. at the Elkins Distilling Company, 1825 N. Lake Ave., said Mike Richardson, public information officer.

Two employees were taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries, Richardson said.

One victim was flown to North Colorado Medical Center Western States Burn Center in Greeley, and a second was being transferred there, according to . Their conditions were not immediately known.

Firefighters extinguished spot fires inside the building, which has extensive roof damage.

“The back ceiling came down, making it dicey as far as getting people in to fight the fire,” Richardson told the Trail-Gazette. “We made a search to make sure no other people were inside, and we put the fire out. The rear of the building is compromised.”

No firefighters were injured. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
