The Birdseye fire in northeast El Paso County outside of Colorado Springs, which was more than 21 acres as of Saturday morning was 90% contained by the afternoon, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire forced mandatory evacuations for within a 2-mile radius of the 19000 block of Birdseye View in Peyton, and an additional 1-mile radius was under pre-evacuation. The sheriff’s office said the plan is for those who left their homes to be able to go back around noon Sunday. Smoke from the fire is still visible.

“If not for the fast response we received from our partners & 200+ people, this fire would have been much more massive, much more destructive,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Facebook post. “The collaboration of all was invaluable in fighting this fire. When crisis strikes, El Paso County steps up to help.”

Evacuated animals can be taken to the El Paso County Fairgrounds, 366 10th St. in Calhan, and evacuated people can go to the Patriot Learning Center, 11990 Swingline Road in Peyton.

As of Saturday morning, one structure had burned, but no people or animals had been injured, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials said the fire began in a structure and then spread.
