Two people are in critical condition after a head-on car crash Monday afternoon in Aurora.

Police temporarily closed Iliff Avenue in both directions between Troy and Peoria streets while they conducted an investigation. All lanes have been reopened.

At about 1:42 p.m., a police officer tried to make a traffic stop of a green Mini Cooper recklessly driving westbound along Iliff Avenue, Aurora police public information officer Elizabeth McGregor said. The car didn’t stop and, from a distance, the officer saw it crash with a black Ford Expedition.

“What we’ve been told is the driver of the vehicle was driving recklessly,” McGregor said.

The drivers from both vehicles were taken to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation.
