A 51-year-old driver who killed a father and injured the man’s young daughter in a crash last year in Denver’s Highland neighborhood will lose his license for a year after reaching a settlement agreement with prosecutors, the Denver district attorney announced Monday.
Patrick Layden pleaded guilty to one count each of careless driving resulting in death and careless driving causing bodily injury, the DA’s office said in a news release. As part of the deal, prosecutors dropped the remaining charges, including assault and vehicular homicide. Layden also received 12 points on his driver’s license.
On April 10, 2021, Layden was experiencing an “unforeseen medical issue”, the DA’s office said, when he crossed double yellow lines and ran a red light at the intersection of 32nd Avenue and Lowell Boulevard, striking a vehicle driven by Bradley Brubaker, 46.
Brubaker was killed and his daughter hospitalized with serious injuries.
A campaign for the family raised more than $144,000, celebrating Brubaker’s as a beloved member of the community who loved playing tag with his kids.
