Adams County Sheriff’s deputies and a domestic shooting suspect they were chasing exchanged gunfire on U.S. 36 early Wednesday, forcing closure for several hours of this route linking Denver and Boulder.

A woman shot in her upper torso at the Villa Apartments, off Pecos Boulevard along 76th Avenue, was hospitalized Wednesday morning but is expected to survive, Adams County Sheriff Sgt. Adam Sherman said.

Deputies notified by a neighbor had gone to her apartment shortly before midnight Tuesday and, a few hours later, spotted the suspect driving by, Sherman said.

That’s where deputies began a pursuit that led onto U.S. 36, also known as the Boulder Turnpike.

“There were shots fired from the suspect’s car at the deputies. There were a few shots fired back by deputies at the suspects,” Sherman said.

Deputies used a tactical maneuver to stop the suspect’s vehicle, and deputies arrested the three occupants, he said.

Nobody was hurt in the chase.

A 17th Judicial District investigation of the shooting required gathering bullet shells and other evidence along the highway. State transportation officials closed both eastbound and westbound lanes of U.S. 36 for several hours early Wednesday between Federal and Sheridan boulevards.

The highway was reopened fully around 7:30 a.m.

Regional Transportation District officials detoured buses during the morning commute, advising riders in an agency posting on Twitter to check RTD service alerts.
