A train derailed in Loveland and spilled hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel early Wednesday morning, according to Loveland Fire Rescue Authority.

The train derailed off a switch on the Great Western Railway line near the 600 block of Madison Avenue about 1 a.m., the .

The train did not tip over, but a fuel tank was punctured, causing the diesel spill.

The fuel was contained and didn’t get into any waterways, according to the fire department.

Great Western Railway is working with their HazMat remediation company to clean up the fuel as well as get the locomotive back on the tracks. Great Western Spokesperson Julie Slagle told the Associated Press that a natural berm helped contain the spilled fuel.

Battalion Chief Kevin Hessler told the Associated press that no one was injured in the derailment, which happened near a sugar factory in an area not far from some homes. The other locomotive and three cars carrying sugar did not derail, he said.
