Updates

10:17 p.m. — Day 1 of the state tournament is over. In the upper classifications, Ponderosa (95 points) holds a slight lead over Pomona (93.5) in Class 5A. Pueblo East (71), Windsor (60) and Roosevelt (59.5) are atop the Class 4A leaderboard. And in Class 5A girls, Grand Junction Central (84.5) holds a 30-point lead over second-place Loveland.

9:31 p.m. — Pomona, which remains the favorite in Class 5A to win a seventh straight title, got a big Thursday performance out of junior Kalob Ybarra. After winning a title as a freshman and then losing in the finals last year, Ybarra advanced to Friday’s semifinals at 165 pounds with a pin and a tech fall. Ybarra is ranked 15th nationally by FloWrestling at 165 pounds, making him the highest-ranked boys wrestler in the state. — Kyle Newman

8:48 p.m. — Poudre senior Billy Greenwood continues to add to his family’s wrestling legacy (Jacob Greenwood was a four-time state champ for the Impalas, and Job Greenwood was a two-time finalist) as he advanced to the semifinals in the Class 5A 157-pound bracket. Greenwood, who had a pair of pins on Thursday, won the title at 144 pounds last year in a dramatic tiebreaker win over Ponderosa’s Jacob Myers. — Kyle Newman

5:53 p.m. — Mountain View’s Isaiah Harrison finished fifth at state as as freshman, and hasn’t been beaten at Ball Arena since. The senior and two-time defending champion improved to 50-0 with an 18-3 second-period tech fall of Falcon sophomore Liam Dolan. It would be a big surprise if Harrison didn’t cruise through the rest of the Class 4A 120-pound bracket with ease. — Kyle Newman

5:35 p.m. — The Pomona girls won the sport’s inaugural team title last year, and are a favorite to repeat again this weekend in Class 5A. Sophomore Justice Gutierrez got the Panthers going with a pin in 33 seconds over Greeley West freshman Angie Diosdado. That improved Gutierrez to 36-0 as she looks to add another 100-pound title to her trophy case and get halfway to a four-peat by the end of the tournament. — Kyle Newman

4:38 p.m. — Team scores in the lower classifications after the opening round of the tournament: Cedaredge and Highland are tied atop the Class 2A standings with 52.5 points, with Wray (45.5) right behind them. In Class 3A, Brush (55.5) and Alamosa (46.5) are ahead. And in girls Class 4A, Pueblo Central has a huge lead with 81.5 points ahead of second-place Skyview (37). — Kyle Newman

2:57 p.m. — Pueblo Central sophomore Acelyn Duran, one of seven undefeated girls wrestlers coming into the tournament, is into Friday’s semifinals after a pair of dominant showings in Thursday’s afternoon session. Duran (27-0 at 100 pounds) pinned Platte Valley freshman Addelynne Sidwell in just 27 seconds in the opening match, then tech-falled Abraham Lincoln sophomore Jovanna Castro 18-3 in the second period of the quarterfinals. As that match demonstrates, Duran can score quickly, and she is a heavy favorite heading into Friday’s semifinal against Callahan sophomore Kayleigh Reese. Duran was a runner-up at 105-pounds last year and looks determined to leave as a champion this weekend. — Kyle Newman

2:45 p.m. — Mullen sophomore Champion Dyes — yes, his dad, T.J. Dyes named him Champion — opened up the defense of his title at 285 pounds with a first-period pin of Fort Morgan freshman Mael Zannon. Mullen is shooting for a second team title in a row but with only six wrestlers in the tournament it won’t be easy for the Mustangs.

“We’re all going to have to win and at least get to the semifinals to have a shot,” Dyes said. — Patrick Saunders

2:05 p.m. — Bennett freshman Emma Faczak believes she can win gold at 105 pounds in Class 4A title. Her belief is powered by her massive upset of Doherty senior Katey Valdez at the Chatfield Lady War Horse Invitational last month. Faczak pinned Valdez late in the second period to hand Valdez her first lost.

Valdez, who is favored to win the 5A title, is one of the nation’s top female wrestlers. Faczek opened her first state tournament Thursday by pinning Eagle Valley’s Luvlyn Ward at 1:27 of the first period. — Patrick Saunders

12:56 p.m. — The tournament’s one potential four-time state champion got off to a quick start. Fowler’s Traven Sharon pinned Primero’s Kyler Spleen in the first period, putting him three wins away from becoming the 35th four-time champion in CHSAA history. — Kyle Newman

12:23 p.m. — With the addition of a second girls classification, Ball Arena feels more full on the opening day of the tournament. The splitting of girls wrestling into Class 5A and Class 4A, the latter of which is wrestling during the opening afternoon session, required the addition of two mats. What was 10 mats is now 12 mats on the floor at Ball Arena. Don’t ask me how CHSAA is going to address further expansion of the tournament, as looking down the line, girls wrestling could potentially expand to more classes in the future and that would require more mats. The floor might be able to fit two more mats in future years, but it’s already getting tight. — Kyle Newman

11:30 p.m. — The state tournament begins today at Ball Arena. And this year, it’s bigger than ever with a second girls classification added to the festivities — not to mention two more mats. There’s one wrestler chasing a fourth state championship (Fowler 126-pounder Traven Sharon) and several others looking to climb another rung on the ladder.

One wrestler vying for his first state crown may be one of the most talented in the building: Ponderosa senior De’Alcapon Veazy, a Michigan commit who first came to Colorado as a junior but didn’t get his first shot on a varsity mat until this winter. Kyle Newman has his story here.

The Class 2A and 3A boys and 4A girls preliminary matches take place from noon to 4 p.m., while 4A and 5A boys and 5A girls matches run from 5-9 p.m. Tickets for the tournament can only be purchased online. . — The Denver Post
