A federal inmate at a high-security prison in southern Colorado died in custody Monday, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Theodore Matthews, a 43-year-old man who was in 2014 of conspiring to participate in a racketeering enterprise, was found unresponsive in the at about 2:15 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the department.
Employees tried to give Matthews medical assistance, but the man was declared dead shortly after, federal officials said.
Matthews was serving a 17.5-year sentence and had transferred to the United States Penitentiary in Florence in July 2024, the release stated. He was scheduled to be released in December 2026, according to .
No employees or other inmates were injured and there is no danger to the public, officials said in the release.
