Inmate’s death at federal prison in Englewood under investigation, officials say

The in-custody death of an inmate at the on Wednesday is under investigation, according to prison officials.

Mauritzio Marco Thornwall, 29, was found unresponsive at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in the low-security prison in Jefferson County, according to a news release from the .

Employees performed life-saving measures until paramedics took Thornwall to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries, prison officials said in the release.

Information about Thornwall’s cause and manner of death, where he was found in the prison and the circumstances leading up to his death was not available Thursday.

No employees or other inmates were injured, prison officials said. The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified of the death.

Thornwall arrived at the Englewood prison in March 2024 after being indicted on weapons charges, according to court records. He took a plea deal in August and was scheduled to be sentenced in November.
