A 35-year-old man faces vehicular homicide and child abuse charges, among other felonies, in the on Tuesday.
The Colorado State Patrol on Wednesday announced the arrest of Jose Salazar in the 12:27 p.m. Tuesday crash near Crossroads Boulevard in Loveland.
The four-vehicle crash was the result of an earlier incident where a vehicle involved in a medical emergency had to pull to the side of the road to receive emergency care, according to a release from the Colorado State Patrol. The secondary crash involved a box truck, a Lexus GX, a Kia Telluride, and a Chevrolet Silverado hauling a trailer.
Salazar was driving the box truck, which veered from the center lane and struck the Lexus that was in the right lane, according to a Wednesday release. It pushed the Lexus forward into the other two vehicles, according to the release.
Two adults and a child who were in the Lexus were transported to the hospital, but the other child in the same car was pronounced dead at the scene. The Larimer County Coroner will release the child’s identity at a later time.
The Colorado State Patrol Vehicular Crimes Unit continues to investigate the crash.
Salazar was arrested and booked into the Larimer County Jail on five felony charges — child abuse, acting recklessly resulting in the death of a child; vehicular homicide while driving under the influence; vehicular homicide while driving recklessly; vehicular assault; and tampering with physical evidence.
He is being held on $250,000 bond and is due in 8th Judicial District Court in Fort Collins at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 29.
