A judge on Monday sentenced a former Lakewood High School security officer to at least 18 years in prison for child sexual assault, announced the 1st Judicial District.

Rubel Tim Martinez was arrested in August 2024 and convicted by a jury in January.

Judge Christopher Rhamey sentenced Martinez to a prison term that ranges from 18 years to up to life. Martinez will also serve between 20 years and up to life on parole, according to the news release.

Rhamey said the assault took place in a “location where all children need to be safe, and sadly, thatap not the case anymore,” according to the news release.

“Parents send their children to school and entrust teachers, principals, and security guards to watch over them,” said Deputy District Attorney Kelsey Einhorn in a statement. “His job was to ensure the safety of students, to protect kids. Instead of using that position of trust to do that, the defendant manipulated a sixteen-year-old into sexual acts.”

Martinez repeatedly sexually assaulted a student from 2014 to 2016. The assault took place both on and off campus and during and after school hours, according to the news release.

The student was a junior and senior at Lakewood High School, which is part of the district, at the time of the abuse. She reported the assaults in August 2024, according to the news release.

The 1st Judicial District released a statement by the former student, who was not named, which read: “While this was something that happened a decade ago, this is still something that is happening every day to our children. It is disappointing and truly unacceptable.”

“To those who survived such trauma, I urge you to share your story and not let it eat you alive,” she said. “We are not alone, and it was not our fault.”
