A man in June was holding a knife on a porch and appeared to move toward the home where his mother was before the officer shot him, according to body camera footage released Monday.
A woman called 911 in the evening June 26 and reported that her brother had a knife and was standing on the front porch of the family’s home, according to the . The woman told the dispatcher that her brother is “on the spectrum” and that her 86-year-old mother was still inside the home. She can also be heard telling her mother to lock the door.
“Please don’t shoot him — he has mental illness,” the woman can be heard on body camera footage telling police as they arrive on scene, later adding: “He’s not a violent person, he’s really not.”
At least five officers can be seen in body camera footage responding to the home in the 200 block of Flint Way. One officer can be heard in the footage telling the man several times to drop the knife. The same officer says that the man’s mother is “right behind” the man inside the home. The man then turned toward the house, and one officer used a stun gun on the man, but he appeared to continue moving. Another officer then shot the man.
Broomfield police have not publicly identified the man.
Rachel Haslett, a Broomfield police spokesperson, said the department would not share additional information about the shooting, citing a pending investigation by the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.
The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy, according to the body camera video’s description.
