Denver to open cooling centers amid Monday heatwave

Monday heat advisory issued for Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties

Hot weather is expected to roast Denver and the surrounding area on Monday, prompting city officials to open cooling centers.

The National Weather Service issued a for Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties on Monday. The advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., according to the weather service.

All recreation centers will open as daytime cooling centers during regular business hours on Monday, providing shelter for people who need a place to cool down, according to Denver’s Department of Public Health and Environment. The recreation centers will have access to drinking water, restrooms and a place to sit. .

Hot temperatures in the upper 90s are forecast for the Boulder and Denver areas and may cause heat-related illnesses, weather service forecasters said.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” forecasters wrote in the heat advisory. “Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.”

Denver temperatures are expected to hit 80 degrees as early as 9 a.m., peak at 97 degrees around 4 p.m. and finally drop back below 80 degrees after 11 p.m., .

Denver Public Library locations will also be open for people to take a break from the heat, city health officials said. That includes:

  • Athmar Park Branch Library, 1055 S. Tejon St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Bear Valley Branch Library, 5171 W. Dartmouth Ave., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, 2401 Welton St., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Central Library, 10 W. 14th Ave., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Decker Branch Library, 1501 S. Logan St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Ford-Warren Branch Library, 2825 High St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Green Valley Ranch Branch Library, 4856 N. Andes Court, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Hadley Branch Library, 1890 S. Grove St., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Lena Archuleta Branch Library, 3300 W. Nevada Place, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Montbello Branch Library, 12955 Albrook Drive, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Park Hill Branch Library, 4705 Montview Blvd., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Pauline Robinson Branch Library, 5575 E. 33rd Ave., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Ross-Cherry Creek Branch Library, 305 Milwaukee St., from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Ross-Phyllis Bigpond Branch Library, 3570 W. First Ave., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
