Foster’s Special Bitter

It’s a lot but it’s light.

Beer aficionados are aware of the “oil cans” produced for Foster’s Lager of Australia. But 25 ounces of beer in one can is a lot for some people.

Enter Foster’s Special Bitter, which is (a.) not bitter and (b.) contains only 2.8 percent alcohol (by volume). It would have been more accurate to label this beer “Foster’s Light,” except it has a strong copper color, an aroma that speaks of malt and it’s low in alcohol but not in calories.

Beyond that, there’s not much to distinguish FSB from its more-famous see-through brother or, for that matter, from dozens of American-made lagers. But the green, gold and red can is big and cool.

FSB is, in fact, not made in Australia but in Toronto, Canada, “under the supervision of Carlton & United Breweries,” the international conglomerate that now owns Foster’s.

A fine beer for hot summer days of August.
