Getting your player ready...

You would never expect the Assistance League of Denver to air its dirty laundry in public. Unless, of course, doing so would raise money for chapter philanthropies.

So when the folks who make Gain laundry detergent approached president Kay Carney and offered a donation in exchange for lending a hand at a Procter & Gamble promotion taking place in Denver’s Skyline Park, members got behind the effort in a big way.

Chris Neubauer of C&C Plumbing was enlisted to design a one-of-a-kind water delivery and disposal system for the 10 washers used to clean clothing donated by friends of the league, passers-by – even an Assistance League of St. Louis member who happened to be visiting in Denver and heard about the event.

Enough clothing to fill three vans was received over the course of the afternoon; the shirts, pants and dresses were sorted, washed and dried on the spot in 24 machines run by ALD volunteers. Some of the items will go to needy children in the Denver Public Schools through ALD’s Operation School Bell project; the rest will be sold in the league’s thrift shop.

Gain donated $10,000 in cash to the ALD, then offered to match every donation made that day – be it a pound of clothing or cash – on a dollar-for-dollar basis, up to $5,000.

Donors included Mary Alice Long, a member of the Assistance League of St. Louis; Denverites Alvin and Sofia Hughes, who dropped off several large plastic bags filled with clothing; and Alex Sollazzo and Kelly Batcha of Connecticut, who were passing through Denver on their way to a wedding in the mountains.

Nan Koenig, Ida Burg and Cindy Donnelly were among the ALD members who volunteered to rub-a-dub-dub.
