New CDs in stores today are coming from one of the most original voices in alt-country, one of the most recognizable voices in mainstream country, and one of the most ridiculously over-the-top voices in countrified Southern rock.

Rhett Miller, “The Believer” (Verve Forecast) It’s impossible to deny Miller’s songwriting prowess. As frontman and lead songwriter for the Old 97s, he’s known as a fierce talent whose keen ability to meld rock and country has won over countless fans. With his first solo record, “The Instigator,” he proved that he’s still quite good on his own. This, his second solo record, cements the deal. In the CD-opening “My Valentine,” he presents his unique take on the power of love. “Sex in wartime is sweeter than peace/Yeah, it’s the one sweet thing about war.” He’s not as fresh with the music as he is with the lyrics – that’s where the Old 97s help him out – but it’s still impossible to find a better album being released this week.

Alan Jackson, “Precious Memories” (Arista) Jackson puts other country stars to shame. He writes a lot of his own music, a rarity among stars who can tap Nashville’s never-ending well of material. Also, Jackson quietly scored 20 No. 1 hits (and 20 other top-10 singles) in the first 12 years of his career. Not too bad for a country boy out of Georgia.

Kid Rock, “Live Trucker” (Atlantic) Did we really need a live Kid Rock record? Too late. All the hits you can imagine are on here, including “Cowboy,” “Bawitdaba,” “Devil Without a Cause” and “Picture,” a duet of the hit, with Gretchen Wilson.
