Haunted hotel: The Brown Palace historian will tell spooky stories and lead free tours of the 115-year-old hotel Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 2-31. One story on the tour involves society dame Louise Crawford Hill, who lived in Room 904 from 1940 to 1955, one of several permanent guests who lived in 20 apartments on the top two floors of the hotel from 1937 to 1986. When the hotel historian told visitors about Mrs. Hill’s heartbreak over a lost love, the main switchboard began receiving calls from Room 904 but there was only static on the line – impossible, as the room had been stripped of furniture, lights, wallpaper, carpet and telephones during renovation. The historian took Mrs. Hill’s saga out of the tour, and the calls from Room 904 ceased. | Ellyngton’s will host a Halloween Monster Brunch on Oct. 28. 321 17th St., 303-297-3111, (tour reservations, ext. 3104) | Kristen Browning-Blas
Emilio’s Super Chef: The Anaheim chile rellenos come wrapped in wonton skins and ooze with creamy white cheese, a perfect contrast to the firm chile. A visit on Sept. 20 left us stuffed and in love with this modest Colfax diner. The green- chile-smothered fries were not the best choice for lunch on a work-filled afternoon, but we couldn’t stop sopping up the tangy chile-melted-cheese mess. The carne asada tacos and the al carbon variety both came with soft corn tortillas and generous pico de gallo brimming with ripe tomatoes. | 338 E.
