The International Snow Sculpture Championships begin with a shotgun start. Teams use hand tools to carve 10-by-10-by-12-foot blocks of snow that are made by local volunteers who stomp down piles of snow dumped into wood frames by front-end loaders, The artists work for 65 hours, and pull an all-nighter on Friday, one of the best times to see what’s taking shape. Super Marimba with Payton MacDonald showcases the ebullient Guatemalan instrument, bringing MacDonald’s unique combination influenced by tabla drumming, jazz and Western classical music.
