Tina Turner, “Tina Live”
(EMI)
Tina Turner’s music acted as a soundtrack to much of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s — an actual soundtrack (“Mad Max Thunderdome” and “Goldeneye”) and a ubiquitous backing to those of us listening to radio.
And while Turner’s recent career has relied heavily on greatest-hits albums, nostalgic anniversaries and this live CD/DVD package — and not new music — it’s easy to get swept up in Turner’s magic.
The 15-track “Tina Live” CD collects most of the jams fans want — including soundtrack songs “Goldeneye” and “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome),” early hits “Proud Mary” and “Nutbush City Limits” and the ballads that became her trademark, including “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” and her popular take on Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”
The live recordings are solid, and Turner’s voice sounds gorgeously intact.
The DVD includes a couple extra tracks, and it’s a good time watching the ageless Turner match her back-up dancers — who are 35 or 40 years her junior, no doubt — move for move throughout takes on “River Deep Mountain High” and “Addicted to Love.” Ricardo Baca
