Elrick Gilman, accused of beating to death a man in Northglenn, was found guilty yesterday of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree assault, Adams County DA spokeswoman Krista Flannigan said.

Gilman, convicted by a jury in Adams County District Court, now faces five to 16 years in prison. He will be sentenced on April 29.

According to court records, Northglenn Police responded to a disturbance call at Washington Street and East 117th Avenue at about 11:47 p.m. July 27, 2009. When they arrived, they found 29-year-old Aaron Anthony lying on the ground unconscious with blood rushing from his head and face.

He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead about 30 minutes later. The cause of death was severe head trauma.

Witnesses testified at trial that Anthony had intervened in a physical altercation between his girlfriend and Gilman. That confrontation escalated to a fist-fight when Nicholas Smiley, Gilman’s co-defendant, joined in. Witnesses testified that Anthony was knocked to the ground, and Gilman continued to hit and kick him.

Gilman and Smiley were later arrested. Gilman was charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

Smiley was charged with first-degree assault. His trial is to begin April 18.
