Q: Do I have to subscribe to my friends’ updates on the new Facebook to see them?

A. According to a post on Facebook’s own blog at on.fb.me/pPH3Z0, you do not have to do anything extra to see updates from the people already on your Friends list. You are already subscribed because you are friends with them. You do need to subscribe to the feeds of people who are not on your Friends list, though. As for the feeds, you automatically get “Most Updates,” or what Facebook calls the “amount you’d normally see.” But with the Subscribed button on each friend’s page, you can adjust the amount and types of updates delivered. If you want to see everything this person posts on Facebook, choose All Updates.

If this is a minor friend and you just want major updates like a job change, choose Only Important. The Subscribed button also allows you to choose the kinds of updates that you want to see, or that you do not want to see, such as posts from games.

Instead of going to each person’s profile page, you can adjust your status-update preferences for your entire Friends list from your own profile page. The New York Times
