Q: Is there a way to print pixelized images obtained online at larger than their original size? I have downloaded some images that I would like to print (or have printed by a printing service), but when the images are enlarged, they come out blurry.

A: The short answer is no. Once a digital image has been downsized, the resulting copy no longer contains enough data to reproduce the original image faithfully at its original dimensions, a Canon representative told me. But he offered a tip that can help when the original image isn’t available, via Adobe Photoshop. Step-by-step instructions: 1. Open the downsized file in Photoshop. 2. Go to the Image pulldown menu and open the Image Size submenu. 3. Change the settings for Document Size as desired (depending on how big you plan to print the image) and change the Resolution to 300 dpi. 4. Make sure the boxes for Scale Styles, Constrain Proportions and Resample Image are all checked. 5. In the Resample Image pulldown menu, select Bicubic Smoother as the interpolation algorithm. 6. Click OK to create the enlarged image.
