Authorities believe operator error likely caused a Regional Transportation District derailment Sunday night at the end of the light rail train line.

“We don’t think this was mechanical error,” said Nate Currey, RTD spokesman.

The black box recording of the incident has not yet been reviewed, Currey said. He said federal officials may get involved in the investigation.

The incident happened about 9 p.m. at the Mineral station. The train violently crashed through the stop block at the end of the line.

The crash caused extensive damage to the train, and electric lines fell across the track.

“It could be a total loss for that first car,” Currey said. “This is a very odd, unusual incident.”

Trains were running a little late for the Monday morning commute.
