On Sunday morning, the Basalt Police Department received a report of a vehicular crash, which later led police to the discovery of a handmade explosive device in a residence.

According to a news release, police received a call about 7:30 a.m. of a domestic dispute that resulted in a vehicular crash. The man involved in the dispute called police to report the crash. But when police arrived, they discovered he had fled the scene.

The female driver was taken into custody on charges of a DUI, where she later informed authorities that the man who fled the scene had a homemade explosive device in their home.

With the driver’s consent, Basalt police and the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office entered the home, where they were able to locate the device. The Grand Junction bomb squad was called to remove it. The squad took it to an area on private property, where it was “disposed of without incident,” according to the release.

Police have identified the male suspect as 28-year-old Dustin Brown, who was arrested by the Grand Junction Police Department and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on a previously existing warrant, according to police.

Police said final charges are still pending because of the ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is encouraged to call Basalt police at 970-927-4316.
