

A man has pleaded guilty to shooting a good Samaritan in Gypsum, prosecutors say.
Jesus Miranda, of Dotsero, last week admitted to six counts in the case, including attempted second-degree murder, first-degree burglary and aggravated robbery. He also pleaded guilty to accusations of second-degree assault and conspiracy to commit second-degree burglary.
Authorities say on Sept. 4, 2015, Miranda, along with a 17-year old girl and two other accomplices, . There, two women were held at gunpoint and told to empty a safe.
Prosecutors say one of the women, the store’s owner, told Miranda there wasn’t any money in the safe, at which point Miranda pistol-whipped her.
As Miranda fled the store, an approaching good Samaritan tried to stop him, putting Miranda in a headlock. According to prosecutors, Miranda responded by firing his 9mm handgun three times into the good Samaritan, striking the man in the chest. He survived.
Miranda is due to be sentenced on Sept. 23, and prosecutors say he faces up to 50 years in prison.
“This plea agreement took into account the wishes of each of the three victims in this case and ensures public safety from this defendant for decades to come,” 5th Judicial District Attorney Bruce Brown said in a statement.
