A mother and daughter who assaulted a black RTD driver when he told them to get off his bus after they refused to pay the fare were sentenced Monday in Denver District Court.
Deanne Y. Sandoval, 46, and Destiny Sandoval, 25, pleaded guilty in May to three misdemeanor charges — third-degree assault, hindering public transportation and harassment using obscene language or gesture, according to the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
The two attacked the driver on Feb. 23 as they attempted to board the Route 30 bus near the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue. They were originally .
Deanne Sandoval was sentenced to two years of probation for the assault conviction, two years of probation for the hindering conviction, and one year of probation for the harassment conviction.
Destiny Sandoval was sentenced to two years of probation for the assault conviction, and one year probation for each of the hindering and harassment convictions.
Their sentences run concurrently, with no additional jail time, according to a news release.
Both women were ordered to complete 50 hours of useful public service and to attend anger-management classes. Their sobriety will be monitored as part of the sentence. They both must pay $641 in restitution.
