There are 14 undefeated FBS teams still standing one month into the college football season. The Colorado Buffaloes are one of them. And yet it’s still impossible to say whether or not they are any good.

As Pac-12 aficionado Jon Wilner over the weekend, the Buffs are 4-0, but it might be the softest 4-0 in college football.

Colorado’s four opponents — Colorado State (1-4), Nebraska (0-4), New Hampshire (0-4) and UCLA (0-4) — are a combined 1-16 so far this season. The only win among them is a miraculous come-from-behind CSU win over Arkansas in Fort Collins. And counted among their losses? Setbacks to such college football powers as Troy, Illinois State and Fresno State.

So what are we to make of the Buffs’ first 4-0 start to a season in 20 years?

If we’re being honest… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’d guess the Buffs are somewhere in college football’s vast upper-middle class between playoff contender and New Mexico Bowl participant.

It’s not easy to win four games in a row, after all. The other guys are giving away scholarships, too.

You can’t fake the amazing things wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. (609 total yards and six touchdowns) does on a week-to-week basis, nor quarterback Steven Montez’s dazzling efficiency (nation-leading 75.2-percent completion rate). But until we see those things against an elite opponent — or, heck, even a good one — it’s all a bunch of empty calories.

Luckily for us, the Buffs’ next three opponents are Arizona State (3-2), at USC (3-2) and at Washington (4-1).

Get through that stretch undefeated and we might start having a different conversation altogether.
