Perhaps it’s disrespect, perhaps it’s blatant ignorance, or maybe it’s a combination of both: Trevor Story ranks fourth in the latest all-star voting for National League shortstops, a sign that fans have no idea what they’re doing.
Story, 26, made his first all-star game last season as a reserve after finishing fourth in the voting. Heading into Wednesday’s action, Story ranked tied for first in home runs (17), first in RBIs (48), first in stolen bases (12), second in OPS (.909), second in average (.294) and second in fielding percentage (.9898) among N.L. shortstops.
And yet he’s polling well behind the Cubs’ Javier Baez in addition to trailing the Braves’ Dansby Swanson and the Dodgers’ Corey Seager, who’s currently on the injured list. What gives, baseball fans?
Call me a homer, but I truly believe True Story is the best shortstop in the National League. I also think there’s a case to be made that Story’s the best shortstop in all of baseball. He’s continued to demonstrate historic power for a shortstop while flashing Gold Glove-worthy defense. He’s also showing much more discipline at the plate.
Baez, who started for the N.L. at second base in last year’s midsummer classic, is the only player who should even challenge Story for the starting spot. Baez, like Story, is an electric player with speed, power and pizzazz. He also happens to get a huge voting boost from playing in Chicago.
Surely, Story — who homered in last year’s all-star game — will make it to Cleveland somehow, even if it’s as a reserve again by way of being chosen by the player ballot and the Commissioner’s Office. But make no mistake, the current voting is a clear-cut case of anti-Rockies bias at a national level. I suppose Story will just have to go deep on national TV, again, to make some fans realize who he is.
