The El Paso County sheriff will investigate a fatal police shooting Monday at a mall in Colorado Springs.
Fugitive detectives with the Colorado Springs Police Department located a man who was wanted on a felony warrant, according to a Tuesday news release from the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect was spotted in a stolen vehicle and he reportedly met up with four people who were in another vehicle, which was also stolen, the sheriff’s office said.
Both vehicles were driven to the Citadel Mall, where detectives surveilled the five people who had gotten out of the two vehicles. Tactical units with the police department were sent to the mall to aid in the arrest of the man wanted on the warrant.
At about 5:12 p.m., the five were exiting the mall near a food court when officers made contact, all five fled on foot, the sheriff’s office said.
Four were “immediately apprehended” and the man who was wanted on the warrant fled into a Burlington Coat Factory store, the release said. Inside the store the suspect allegedly “produced” a handgun and “at least one officer fired at least one round at the suspect, ending the pursuit,” police said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Three of the other four who were apprehended were armed with handguns, the sheriff’s office said. Three of the four suspects are juveniles and one is an adult.
An investigation into the police shooting, lead by the sheriff’s office, is ongoing. The man who was shot was not identified on Tuesday.
EPSO will be the lead investigating agency on this CSPD Officer Involved Shooting case. Lieutenant Havenar will provide on camera public safety message.
