The driver of a New Year’s Day rollover crash that killed him and his wife and injured their children may not have been asleep at the wheel, according to the ongoing investigation from Colorado State Patrol.
State patrol officials previously said that Joshua Gilson, a 43-year-old man from Castle Rock, fell asleep while driving north on U.S. 36 near Lefthand Canyon Drive, crossed over the center grass median and rolled onto the opposite side of the highway.
Gilson and his wife, Christina, were both killed in the crash. Their 11-year-old and 16-year-old children were injured and the family’s dog had to be put down after the crash due to its injuries.
“Initial information at the scene indicated fatigue may have been a contributing factor,” state patrol officials said in a news release Wednesday. “However, no definitive cause has been determined, and the case remains under investigation.”
Officials apologized in the news release to the family and friends of the victims who were “impacted by the incorrect statement about the crash’s cause.”
