A man fell asleep at the wheel before the rollover crash that killed himself and the mother of his two children while the family was driving near Lefthand Canyon on New Year’s Day, according to Colorado State Patrol.
Joshua and Christina Gilson, both 43, were residents of Castle Rock Their children, ages 11 and 16, were present and injured in the crash, and the family’s dog was also injured and had to be euthanized.
Colorado State Patrol also said in a news release that Christina Gilson was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Investigators say the Gilsons’ vehicle was traveling north on U.S. 36 near Lefthand Canyon Drive when it crossed over the center grass median, rolled and came to rest on the opposite side of the highway.
