9:15 p.m.: That’s just about a wrap for Day 2 inside Ball Arena.

Don’t look now, but Ponderosa has Pomona on the run in the Class 5A boys championships. The Mustangs will enter the final day of wrestling with a slight edge over the Panthers, who have won six consecutive 5A boys titles and eight of the last nine.

Here’s a look at the team leaders going into Championship Saturday …

Class 5A boys: 1. Ponderosa 174.0, 2. Pomona 169.0, 3. Grandview 111.0, 4. Fruita Monument 83.0, 5. Pine Creek 80.0

Class 4A boys: 1. Pueblo East 166.0, 2. Windsor 108.5, 3. Roosevelt 97.0, 4. Mead 93.5, 5. Sand Creek 86.5

Class 3A boys: 1. Alamosa 106.5, 2. Brush 104.0, 3. Eaton 87.5, 4. Centauri 73.5, 5. Resurrection Christian 61.0

Class 2A boys: 1. Wray 114.0, 2. Cedaredge 110.0, 3. North Fork 102.0, 4. Highland 92.5, 5. Sedgwick County/Fleming 79.0

Class 5A girls: 1. Grand Junction Central 125.5, 2. Loveland 98.5, 3. Chatfield 90.0, 4. Widefield 85.0, 5. Pomona 78.5

Class 4A girls: 1. Pueblo Central 141.5, 2. Skyview 71.5, 3. Severance 65.0, 4. Canon City 61.0, T5. Strasburg 55.0, T5. Wiggins 55.0

7:49 p.m.: Undefeated Windsor junior Evan Perez is tearing through the 215-pound bracket in Class 4A. Three matches in, Perez has wrestled a grand total of 71 seconds, pinning his opponents in 11, 24 and 35 seconds. — Matt Schubert

7:43 p.m.: It’s too easy for Veazy. Nationally ranked Ponderosa senior De’Alcapon Veazy cruised into the Class 5A 190-pound finals with a first-period pin of Poudre senior Ryder Clarkson. Through three matches, the Michigan commit has yet to allow an opponent to advance past the first period. — Kyle Newman

6:53 p.m.: Chaparral senior Declan Strait, who won a title as a freshman in 2022 but hasn’t been back to the mountaintop since, is back into the finals in the Class 5A 126-pound bracket. He will take on Ponderosa sophomore Jack Simpson. — Kyle Newman

6:45 p.m.: Fowler senior Traven Sharon is one win away from becoming the 35th four-time state champion in CHSAA history. He beat Olathe senior Trevor Piatt via a 9-0 major decision in the Class 2A 126-pound bracket to set up a title match against Meeker sophomore Koy Weber. –– Kyle Newman

6:26 p.m.: Mountain View senior Isaiah Harrison made quick work of his semifinal matchup at Class 4A 120 pounds. The two-time defending champion pinned Air Academy junior Aleq Countryman in just 43 seconds to set up a title showdown against Palisade junior Teagan Young. — Kyle Newman

6:12 p.m.:  Pomona, which boasts one of the biggest and best youth clubs in the state, has a seemingly endless trove of young wrestlers who burst onto the scene each February at Ball Arena. The latest of those? Lincoln Valdez, who tech-falled his way through three matches and into Saturday’s finals at Class 5A 106 pounds. His Friday night dismantling of Ponderosa freshman Onofre Gonzales was a 16-1 tech fall that came in one period of work. Valdez faces ThunderRidge junior Emmett Alexander for the title. — Kyle Newman

4:51 p.m.: A few of the better wrestling names for those competitors in Friday night’s state semifinals: Ethyn BravoPacker (Brighton); Gunner Lopez (Grandview); DJ Wince (Ponderosa); Charlie Herting (Grandview); Cole Good (Eagle Valley); Justus Freeman (Pueblo East); Achilles Evans (Sand Creek); Ripp Lockhart (Delta); Champion Dyes (Mullen); and Ella Splitter (Lamar). — Patrick Saunders

3:10 p.m.: Chatfield junior Ryen Hickey, ranked ninth nationally at 145 pounds, is steam-rolling her way toward the 5A girls finals. After quick pins in her first two matches, she is 42-0 this season heading into Friday night’s semifinal vs. Arapahoe junior Lizzie Padilla. — Patrick Saunders

1:48 p.m.: After a couple consolation rounds, here’s how the team standings look in the lower classifications. Cedaredge (66.5) leads Class 2A, with Wray (63) and Rocky Ford (59) close. In Class 3A, Brush (64) holds a lead on Valley (52.5) and Alamosa (51.5). And in girls Class 4A, Pueblo Central (95.5) holds a commanding advantage over second-place Lamar (45.5). — Kyle Newman

12:30 p.m.:  The Pomona girls hope to repeat as state champions but face a rough road as Friday night’s semifinals near. The Panthers (44 points) sit in fourth place behind Grand Junction Central (84.5), Loveland (54.5) and Brighton (52.0).

Pomona has three girls in the semifinals — Justice Gutierrez (100 pounds), Alora Martinez (125) and Timberley Martinez (140) — and coach Matt Gutierrez said he needs big nights from all three.

“We crunched the numbers and it looks like we need all three of those girls to pin their way into the finals,” he said. “And we need to score some points this afternoon (in the consolation rounds).” — Patrick Saunders

11:17 a.m.: How can Ponderosa finally dethrone Pomona for the 5A boys championship? It’s going to take a lot of wrestlers making the championship round, and more than a few winning it all. One day in, the Mustangs appear to have a fighting chance. Not only did they enter the day ahead of Pomona in the team standings, they had the same number of semifinalists (9) as the Panthers.

That means we might actually have some drama come Saturday night — with Pondo and Pomona even going head-to-head in a few finals.

The nine semifinalists for those two programs is tops in the entire tournament, with the Grand Junction girls the next closest with seven in the 5A girls brackets. Pueblo Central has six semifinalists in the 4A girls tournament. — Matt Schubert

10:55 a.m. Although there are two girls’ classes at the state wrestling tournament this year for the first time, there is only one female official at Ball Arena. But she’s is something of a legend. Now in here 23rd year of officiating, Nadine Ihde-Johnston was the first recipient of the National AAU Wrestling Women’s Official of the year. She officiates in Iowa, as well as Colorado. — Patrick Saunders

9:11 a.m.: While the semifinals aren’t until tonight, today’s wrestlebacks are key for any team who wants to contend for a state title. Getting wrestlers into the “blood rounds,” where they can compete for points on the back end of the podium, is a critical piece of putting a team in position to claim the title on Saturday. In the Class 5A boys title race, which enters the day neck-and-neck between powerhouses Ponderosa and Pomona, the Mustangs need to have a good showing on the consolation side of the bracket in order to have a chance at dethroning the six-time defending champion Panthers. — Kyle Newman

9 a.m.: The second day of the state wrestling tournament is underway. By the end of the day, we will know who has advanced to Saturday’s championship rounds and which schools are positioned to compete for team titles. But first, it’s time to get to the wrestlebacks. Class 2A/3A boys and Class 4A girls consolation matches will run until noon and be immediately followed by Class 4A/5A boys and Class 5A girls consolation matches from 12:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. All of the semifinals are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.

In case you missed it, Kyle Newman caught up with the Doogie Howser of Colorado state wrestling: Holly sophomore brainiac Jerry Holdren, who’s set to graduate from high school two years early and is soaking in his last state tournament at Ball Arena. Patrick Saunders checked in with Doherty 105-pounder Katey Valdez, a nationally ranked star who has some very big goals. And here’s one more story on a pair of Canon City girls chasing program history.
