Pueblo doesn’t get the respect it deserves. Straddling Interstate 25 in a part of the state wrongly considered pass-through territory, Pueblo is all about the state fair, the mental hospital and the steel mill, right? Wrong. After two visits to Colorado’s sixth-largest city, we are sold on the history, the museums, the scenery and the lively downtown. We also like the kayak park and paths along the Arkansas River, the gorgeous late-19th century architecture and the city’s healthy respect for green chile. – Dana Coffield

Getting around: From Interstate 25 in Pueblo, take the 13th Street exit (99B) and head west to North Greenwood Street, then go north one block to the Rosemount Museum.

To reach historic downtown Pueblo from 13th Street, head south on Grand Avenue to Union.
