Women and the West

A Woman’s Place … Is on the Range

Colorado History Museum

1300 Broadway, Denver

Is it too soon to start thinking about the National Western Stock Show, Rodeo & Horse Show? The big show doesn’t open until Jan. 7, but the Colorado History Museum is warming up with an exhibit that doffs a 10-gallon hat to the National Western’s 100th anniversary. It also honors the role women have played since the 1800s in ranching, cattle and stock associations, rodeo and stock shows, and their influences on popular culture. The photo- and document-based exhibit opens Friday and runs through December 2007. It’s a six-part show that examines, among other things, women’s work on ranches, the Wild West Show and Rodeo (think Annie Oakley), cowgirl poetry and fashion. Yee-haw!
