Many of us have heard tales about back in the day, when Five Points was Denver’s happening jazz destination. But in truth, most of us are woefully lacking in understanding the long and colorful history of the city’s first streetcar suburb. For this trip, start at the third floor of the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, dedicated in 2003 for Omar Blair, the first black president of the Denver school board, and Elvin Caldwell, the first black City Council member. Here you’ll get an efficient primer on the history, art, literature and music of African-Americans in Colorado and the West. Then head back outside and follow the Welton Street Cultural District markers to get a sense of who came before you. Along the way, try some of the excellent restaurants and coffee shops that give Five Points its unique flavor. Get there during Black History Month, when the library is screening episodes of the documentary series “Eyes on the Prize,” chronicling the American civil rights movement. Next up: “Ain’t Scared of Your Jails” and “No Easy Walk,” 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday.
