Steamboat Springs, where children learn to ski before they can walk, has produced 69 Olympians, 15 members of the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame and six members of the National Ski Hall of Fame, and still hosts scads of ski bums and bunnies. The town, known as Ski Town USA, sits between two mountains: Howelsen Hill, Colorado’s oldest operating ski area, and Steamboat Ski Area, six peaks covered in “champagne powder” 4 miles to the east. You don’t have to be skinny, blond and twentysomething to dance, drink and prowl the night away after a day on the slopes, but it sure doesn’t hurt. Powderhounds can party at the mountain or in town, on-the-cheap or frou-frou, with or without reservations, children or locals. Those who prefer to make sitzmarks in the sofa can call Massage to Go for a therapist (970-879-4603) and Cuisines Dining Delivery Service (970-871-9987) for menus and wines from a variety of eateries.
