Law students, especially those with dreams of graduating at the top of their class, have very little free time. And that makes Amy Gray’s extracurricular activities all the more amazing.

A second-year student at the University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law, Gray has helped more than 100 girls win college athletic scholarships; she also travels the country to conduct soccer camps for girls ages 8 to 18.

Gray was one of three Colorado law students receiving scholarships from the Sam Cary Bar Association at the SCBA’s fourth annual gala. Other recipients were Allison Lott, a third-year law student at the University of Colorado, and Nitche Ward, who is in her second year at DU’s law school. Another Sturm student, Linda Lee, winner of the Hoffman Mock Trial Competition, also was introduced.

Victor Devereaux chaired the gala that also marked the SCBA’s 35th year. Denver Post editor Gregory Moore was master of ceremonies; Renee Cooper and Dante James presented the scholarships; Adrian Miller recounted the association’s history; and president Dianne Briscoe welcomed the 350 guests.

The late King Trimble founded the association with a group of African-American lawyers that included Marilynn Cason, Norm Early, Alfred Harrell, Gary Jackson, Philip Jones, Raymond Dean Jones, Billy Lewis and Dan Muse.

Trimble’s widow, Dixie, was there with the couple’s son, Omari, to present the first King Trimble Lifetime Achievement Award to mentor and role model Gary Jackson.

Asante stools imported from Ghana, where they are given to persons of honor, were presented to all of the SCBA’s living founders.

Other good stuff

DJ Khadiwala, otherwise known as Artemis Khadiwala-Donian’s son, Alex, will be spinning the tunes for tonight’s opening of the Sutra Room nightclub, 1109 Lincoln St. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Once again, the Citizen of the West Dinner is a sell-out. Cort Dietler will be honored at the Jan. 10 event; Marne Davis Kellogg is chairing the arrangements committee while Pat Grant and Ben Houston head the benefit’s steering committee. Proceeds go to the National Western Scholarship Trust.

The first Tom Knorr Award for Community Service will be presented Jan. 11 when Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods has its annual meeting at a location to be determined. The honor is named for CHUN’s former executive director, whose work on behalf of the homeless, public safety and building the People’s Fair is legendary.
