The Easter Bunny isn’t the only one with delicious stuff to share today. We’ve got a few treats of our own:
Were it not for Dr. Paul Bunn, Colorado would not have a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center. Now, after 20 years as its leader, Bunn has decided to relinquish his administrative role to concentrate on research and patient care. His friends figure that a fitting tribute to both his vision and accomplishments would be to endow a chair in his name. A dinner to raise the necessary $2 million is set for May 13 at the Grand Hyatt Denver, with Phil and Nancy Anschutz, along with Hank and Nan Brown, serving as honorary chairmen. Details on the $1,000-a-ticket affair are available from the center’s development director, Libby Printz, 303-724-3156.
One thousand friends of the Latin American Educational Foundation enjoyed music by Los Lonely Boys and the comedy stylings of Bill Santiago when they gathered at the Adam’s Mark Hotel for Celebracion 2008, which raised $535,000 for the organization’s scholarship fund. U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar, Gov. Bill Ritter and Mayor John Hickenlooper — along with wives Hope Hernandez Salazar, Jeannie Ritter and Helen Thorpe — were the honorary chairs; CBS4 sports anchor Reggie Rivers was the auctioneer. In addition, U.S. Undersecretary of Education Sara Martinez Tucker was given the Sol Trujillo National Lifetime Leadership Award. Regis University junior Jacob Sandoval was named student of the year.
Attorney Mary Stuart, a partner at Holme Roberts & Owen, has been named chair of the Women’s Foundation of Colorado board for 2008. New trustees elected at a recent meeting are AJ Clemmons, community relations ombudsman for Denver’s Office of the Independent Monitor; philanthropist Barbara Bridges, who also serves on the boards of the Denver Film Society, The White House Project and PeaceJam; Carol Burt, former senior vice president at Wellpoint; Fred Taylor, co-founder of Northstar Investment Advisors; Janet Martin, president and managing partner of Communication Arts; Kit Mura-Smith, a founder of the GPS technology firm Trimble Navigation; Pueblo Chieftain writer Sandy Stein; and Margie Gart, who also sits on the Kent Denver School and Rose Community Foundation boards.
Families First will give its 2008 Friend of the Children Award to longtime supporters Deb and Jerry Sturm at the April 26 Steppin’ Out gala that Denise McClard is chairing at the Marriott City Center.
The Donald R. Seawell Grand Ballroom is 10 years old April 1, but no commemoration is being planned. The University of Denver, however, is having a gala April 26 to mark the fifth anniversary of the Robert and Judi Newman Center. It’s being chaired by Scott and Virginia Reiman. The second installment of Dining in Denver 2008 takes place Tuesday at the Corner Office restaurant in the Curtis Hotel.
