It was a proud moment for the University of Colorado when it was announced that David Wineland would share the with Serge Haroche of France.

The pride continued two years later when Wineland was honored at a gala benefiting the ARCS.

Wineland, a researcher at and lecturer in the department of physics, was introduced by university president Bruce Benson, who reminded guests that Wineland and Haroche received the Nobel Prize for their “groundbreaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems.”

The gala, held at , was chaired by president-elect Susan Speece. meteorologist Dave Aguilera was master of ceremonies. It raised a record $125,000.

In addition to remarks by Wineland, guests also heard from ARCS Scholar Christine Fanchiang. Fanchiang, a Ph.D. candidate in aerospace engineering sciences at CU-Boulder, is one of the future doctors, astronauts and research scientists receiving tuition assistance from ARCS.

She also was a participant in the space research celebration held at the state Capitol in March.

Fanchiang said she intends to be “an explorer on the moon, or even Mars,” adding that she is currently helping to develop a “predictive human performance model” to help spacecraft designers “better understand the relationship between their design and its effect on crew performance, thus helping to improve vehicle safety.”

Chapter president Ann Brown helped Speece welcome such guests as Colorado State University Chancellor Michael Martin and his wife, Jan; national ARCS president Nancy Spetzler, who is from Phoenix; Wineland’s wife, Sedna Helen Quimby; their son, Michael Wineland; James Crocker, , and his wife, Barbara; Lyda Ludeman; and such ARCS Scholars as Lincoln Pac and Jeryl Sandoval.
