Literature circle
A literary event is born in Denver for lovers of reading and writing. The Colorado Book Festival is the only showcase of writing and books by Colorado authors, with programs about reading, literacy and the art of writing. The free event is on March 3 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Denver Public Library’s Central Branch (10 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy.) Bibliophiles will have the opportunity to interact with authors, attend workshops, enjoy panels with experts in the field and tour the library’s massive art collection. Find forums about everything from book clubs to the popularity of mysteries.
Formal affair
No one should miss out on prom because of the expense of getting a dress. The annual Prom Dress Exchange offers more than 1,500 gently-used dresses on March 3 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NOAH’s Event Center (11885 N. Bradburn Ave.) in Westminster. Students will find a range of formals, from minis to ball gowns, as well as deeply discounted (but limited) shoes, hair accessories, jewelry and handbags. Attendees are asked for a $10 donation or to bring a gently-used outfit to exchange. However, no one will be turned away. Seamstresses will be on hand to help with minor adjustments.
Sweet dreams
Sonic Drive-In is shaking up nights by bringing back its sweetest offer. Starting March 5, after 8 p.m., all of its shakes, floats and ice cream slushes are 50 percent off. The deal has become a summertime tradition for frugalistas, as the offer usually ends around Labor Day. There are many sweet options to satisfy late-night cravings. Sonic’s shake menu is divided into two types: classic and master. The latter is slightly higher in price because of additional mix-in ingredients. With no limit, everyone can get a shake down without breaking the bank.
Track listing
Families will be on track for a fun day with this freebie. On March 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Colorado Railroad Museum (17155 W. 44th Ave.) in Golden is hosting its first free day of the year. Built as a replica of an 1880s train depot, the museum houses thousands of rare photographs, artifacts and documents, highlighting the colorful history of Colorado railroads for more than 125 years. Rides cost extra at $4 for adults (16 and older), $2 for children (ages 2-15) and free for little ones under 2. If you miss the station on this one, there are two more free days in 2018 — April 12 and Oct. 11.
Double down
Customers will be seeing double for just a single buck at Wendy’s. It’s been years since the fast-food chain has offered a burger at such a low price. For a limited time, the fast-food chain is offering its Double Stack burger for just $1, a savings of more than 50 percent. The burger is two patties with cheese, ketchup, mustard, pickle and onion. At this price, a family of four could easily dine for about $10 — just share the fries or skip the sodas.
